Men of the Cloth Need Care, Too: Massage and Self Care for Clergy
Clergy spend much of their lives caring for others, but their own bodies need care, too. Discover a private, discreet space in Washington, DC where clergy can slow down, release tension, and simply allow someone else to take care of them.
Being a clergyman often means being available when someone else needs you.
You listen. You counsel. You comfort families through grief. You celebrate weddings, baptisms, anniversaries, and new beginnings. You prepare homilies, attend meetings, visit the sick, answer calls, manage responsibilities behind the scenes, and somehow find time for your own spiritual life in the middle of it all.
That kind of service can be deeply meaningful. It can also be physically and emotionally exhausting.
And sometimes, the person who spends so much time caring for everyone else needs someone to take care of him.
Your Body Carries the Work, Too
Stress does not stay neatly tucked away in the mind. The body carries it.
Long hours standing during services can leave your lower back, legs, and feet aching. Hours spent sitting, writing, reading, driving, or working at a computer can contribute to tension in your neck and shoulders. Travel, parish responsibilities, interrupted sleep, and a demanding schedule can make it difficult to fully relax.
You may become so accustomed to carrying tension that you do not realize how tight your body has become until someone begins working on those muscles.
Massage therapy gives you an opportunity to slow down and pay attention to what your body has been telling you.
A Quiet Place Where Nothing Is Expected of You
One of the things I value most about my work is creating a space where a man can simply relax.
At Squire Massage, I would be glad to welcome you into my discreet, private home and cozy massage studio in Northeast Washington, DC.
There is no congregation waiting for you. No meeting to lead. No problem you have to solve.
For the next hour, 90 minutes, two hours, or however long you choose, you can simply be present and allow someone else to take care of you.
A heated massage table, warm towels, aromatherapy, and soothing music will be waiting for you.
During your massage, you can chat if you feel like talking, or simply close your eyes and enjoy the music and quiet. If there is a particular area you would like me to spend more time on, we will make time for that, too.
Massage Personalized to Your Body
No two bodies arrive at my studio needing exactly the same thing.
You may have tight shoulders from sitting at a desk. Your lower back may be bothering you after standing for long periods. Your legs and feet may feel tired. Perhaps you have been traveling and simply want to decompress.
That is why I personalize each massage around what you need that day.
Depending on your preferences, your session may incorporate Swedish massage, deeper pressure, trigger point work, stretching, reflexology, aromatherapy, or other therapeutic techniques.
And if what you need most is simply a quiet, nurturing massage that allows you to relax for a while, that is perfectly fine, too.
Privacy Matters
For clergy, privacy can carry a different weight.
You may live or work in a community where people recognize you. You may spend much of your day in a public facing role. Sometimes you simply want somewhere you can go without having to be “Father” for a little while.
I understand that.
My studio is intentionally private and personal rather than a busy spa environment. Appointments are scheduled individually, allowing you to arrive, settle in, and enjoy your session without the atmosphere of a crowded waiting room.
What brings you to my massage table is your business.
Whether you are dealing with stress, soreness, fatigue, tight muscles, or simply need a couple of hours to yourself, you deserve the same dignity and respect I offer every man who walks through my door.
Taking Care of Yourself Is Not Selfish
People who devote themselves to caring for others sometimes become very good at postponing their own needs.
There will always be another person to call.
Another email.
Another meeting.
Another homily.
Another responsibility.
Your body, however, does not necessarily wait for your schedule to become convenient.
Regular massage can become one part of a broader self care routine that includes movement, adequate sleep, good nutrition, exercise, medical care, prayer, quiet time, friendships, and genuine rest.
You do not have to wait until you are completely exhausted to give yourself permission to slow down.
Come Exactly as You Are
You do not have to impress me.
You do not have to explain your vocation.
And you certainly do not have to apologize for needing some time for yourself.
Come in. Get comfortable. Let the outside world stay outside for a while.
You spend a great deal of your life taking care of other people.
For a little while, let me take care of you.

Do I Really Need a Massage?
Many men ask me, “Do I really need a massage?”
The honest answer is that you do not need to be injured, in severe pain, or under a great deal of stress to benefit from massage. Massage is not only something you turn to when your body reaches its limit. It can also be a regular part of caring for yourself and maintaining your overall comfort.
Your Body Changes as You Get Older
As we age, it is common to notice more stiffness, reduced flexibility, or discomfort after everyday activities. Sitting for long periods, working at a desk, exercising, traveling, doing yardwork, and even sleeping in an awkward position can leave your muscles feeling tight.
You may also find that your body does not recover as quickly as it once did. Tension can gradually build in areas such as the neck, shoulders, lower back, hips, and legs.
Massage may help release some of that tension, support mobility, and help you feel more comfortable in your body.
You Do Not Have to Wait Until Something Hurts
Many people schedule a massage only after they begin experiencing pain or significant discomfort. While massage may help ease muscle tension and everyday aches, you do not have to wait until your body is demanding attention.
Regular massage can give you an opportunity to slow down, notice how your body feels, and address areas of tension before they become more distracting.
Think of massage as one part of your personal wellness routine, alongside movement, proper rest, hydration, and other healthy habits.
Massage Can Support More Than Your Muscles
The benefits of massage are not limited to physical comfort. A massage session also gives you permission to pause.
Many men spend years taking care of their families, careers, homes, and communities. Making time for yourself may feel unfamiliar or even unnecessary. However, rest and relaxation are important parts of taking care of your health and well-being.
Massage may help you:
Ease muscle tension and everyday aches
Improve flexibility and mobility
Reduce stress and encourage relaxation
Feel more comfortable and connected to your body
Take time for yourself in a private, nurturing environment
A Client’s Experience
I had an incredible therapeutic trigger point deep tissue massage with Marlon. From the moment I arrived, he was welcoming and created a space where I immediately felt safe and comfortable. His calm energy made it easy for me to fully relax and get the most out of the experience.
I’ve been dealing with a lot of stress and pain in my shoulders and back, along with headaches and neck strain. I had so many knots and areas of tension that I desperately needed relief from. Marlon was very attentive and really helped release a lot of that built-up stress.
I’m writing this review a day later so I could truly feel the benefits of the massage, and I can honestly say it made a big difference. He also provided helpful materials with professional recommendations, including notes on home care, post-treatment guidance, and suggestions for my next visit.
I’m very grateful he’s close by and was so accommodating. I’ll definitely be booking another session. Thank you, Marlon!

A Different Kind of Pride Celebration
Pride doesn’t have to be loud to be meaningful. Discover a different way to celebrate through self care, exploration, relaxation, and giving yourself permission to be cared for.
Pride Month often brings images of parades, festivals, crowded streets, and late night celebrations. For many people, these events are an important way to connect with community, celebrate identity, and enjoy the energy that Pride brings.
But Pride does not have to look the same for everyone.
As we get older, many of us discover that our idea of celebration begins to change. The things that once felt exciting may not hold the same appeal they once did. We may find ourselves drawn to quieter experiences, meaningful conversations, slower moments, and activities that leave us feeling refreshed rather than exhausted.
There is no right or wrong way to celebrate Pride.
For some, it may mean spending the day playing tourist in their own city. Visiting a museum they have never explored. Walking through the U.S. Botanic Garden. Spending a relaxing afternoon at the zoo. Sitting in a coffee shop with a good book. Taking a leisurely walk through a favorite neighborhood.
For others, it may mean sharing a meal with friends, attending a community event, or simply enjoying a quiet day at home.
What matters most is that the experience feels meaningful to you.
Many men spend years focused on work, family, responsibilities, and the needs of others. They become accustomed to taking care of everyone around them while putting their own needs on hold.
Pride can be a reminder that your wellbeing matters too.
Taking care of yourself is not selfish. It is not something that must be earned after everything else is finished. It is an important part of maintaining your health, mobility, comfort, and quality of life.
Sometimes self care looks like getting more sleep.
Sometimes it looks like moving your body.
Sometimes it looks like spending time with people who make you feel seen and appreciated.
And sometimes it looks like giving yourself permission to slow down and receive care.
One of the things I hear most often from clients is how rarely they allow themselves uninterrupted time to simply relax. Not because they do not want it, but because there is always something else demanding their attention.
A massage creates space to step away from those demands, even if only for a few hours.
For those looking for a deeper experience, The Deep Reset was created for exactly that purpose. This three hour session combines therapeutic massage, Himalayan Salt Hot Stones, aromatherapy, reflexology, and stretching in a calm, unhurried environment. It allows time not only to address physical tension, but also to experience the mental and emotional benefits that come from slowing down.
The goal is simple: to help you leave feeling better than when you arrived.
This Pride Month, whether you choose to celebrate in a crowd, explore something new, reconnect with friends, or spend the day focusing on your own wellbeing, remember that celebration can take many forms.
Sometimes it looks like adventure.
Sometimes it looks like connection.
Sometimes it looks like healing.
And sometimes it looks like giving yourself permission to be cared for.
Happy Pride Month.
